Go Green with Skylights, and save money too

We all want to be a little “greener”, but in all seriousness, not if it’s going to cost us extra money. Finding ways to be a little more ‘environmentally friendly, AND save some cash is the current goal of most homeowners and building managers. Saving money comes down to using energy efficiently, and conserving as much as possible, and this also provides for many other significant benefits.

There are many obvious ways to save money on your energy usage, for example turning off unnecessary lights, maintaining your heating and cooling systems, and ensuring any appliances are using energy efficiently. As an example, many of the less recent major appliances, such as refrigerators, use energy much less effectively than more recent ones, and the cost savings can be more than you would think. Also, consider replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs which uses 75% less energy and lasts about 10 times longer. Installing proper insulation to either keep your heat in, or keep the heat out, depending on the season, can also have a major impact on your utility payments.

All these are excellent suggestions, but worldwide, there is a universal solution to being green and reducing your energy usage, but making a difference you can see and feel – installing a skylight.

Letting there be light in our homes and offices is taken for granted these days, since we have electric lighting easily available, but by installing skylights, the beautiful daylight that we all enjoy being outside in, can be brought inside. By bringing natural sunlight into rooms such as family rooms, offices, kitchens, bathrooms, etc., decreases electricity consumption, but also enables natural daylight to stream in and fill the space. Skylights can literally transform a dark and gloomy room into the brightest and most inviting room.

The light a skylight brings into the space is a quality that no electric light source can replicate. When skylights are installed by a skylight specialist, you can discover how easy it can be to get a new skylight custom manufactured and installed, and see how you can let there be light in places where you wish you had light, but never thought you could. You'll be able to work with a professional and knowledgeable expert, who can work with you through all aspects of installing the skylight, including discussing potential locations for the biggest impact, the skylights that work best with your roof type, any issues that might affect your skylight ownership - for example any overhanging trees - and any other questions you may have. Also, don't forget to enquire about any guarantees, warranties or maintenance programs - that is unless you are planning to visit your roof every year and clean your skylight, plus check it for any damage.

Whether you consider a skylight to be green and environmentally friendly (it is), cost effective (it is), or you just love the idea of basking in natural sunlight inside your home or building, you should definitely look into the possibilities of a skylight before you fill your house will more electric lights, or just continue to live in the dark!

What you didn't realize about Skylights

Maybe you didn’t realize it, but your standard window can never be as capable as a skylight for effectively lighting a space with stunning, natural daylight.

Because the skylight is positioned in your roof, sunlight floods in, providing much more light and, spreading it more uniformly throughout the space. Your regular windows rely on deflected light from the environment around your building, and you end up with very poor light that doesn’t brighten very far into the space, and certainly not evenly. Unfortunately, most people, when thinking about a skylight, assume that the impact will be the same as adding a new window - huge mistake!

Even when it's not summer, a new skylight can noticeably lighten a room or a space as it captures natural light that simply isn’t available to normal windows due to the reflected light. In fact, Autumn is a perfect time to consider installing that new skylight, because not only will you capture all the light into you home or space at a time when you think everything is getting darker, but many skylight manufacturers appreciate that this is a slower period for them, and offer significant savings that just aren't available earlier in the year.

Another major advantage you may not have realised is how skylights can save you bucks, and we mean significant savings...

Firstly, without the need to add additional electric lights in your space, either through extra ceiling lights or through floor lamps or side lamps, you save the power costs of those lights. In these days of lightbulb manufacturers claiming significant savings for one bulb over another, think about no bulbs over any bulb as a saving. Furthermore, with sunlight comes natural warmth, therefore your heating costs will be reduced, if you need any at all.

If you’re worried about roof damage or leaks, don’t be. There are many different styles and sizes that will work with any type of roof, and any new skylight will be fully guaranteed against leaks. If you are concerned, take out a warranty programme with your provider to ensure your skylight is always clean, and intact.

Why not call a skylight specialist today, and discover how easy it can be to get a new skylight custom manufactured and installed, and discover how you can let there be light in places where you wish you had light, but never thought you could. You'll be able to work with a professional and knowlegable expert, who can work with you through all aspects of installing the skylight, including discussing potential locations for the biggest impact, the skylights that work best with your roof type, any issues that might affect your skylight ownership - for example any overhanging trees - and any other questions you may have. Also, don't forget to enquire about any guarantees, warranies or maintenance programs - that is unless you are planning to visit your roof every year and clean your skylight, plus check it for any damage.

Whether you consider a skylight to be cost effective (it is), suitably green and environtmentally friendly (it is), or you just love the idea of basking in natural sunlight inside your home or building, you should definitely look into the possibilities of a skylight before you fill your house will more electric lights, or just continue to live in the dark!
